A Permian nurse log and evidence for facilitation in high-latitude Glossopteris forests

چکیده
The biology of trees that grew in high‐latitude forests during warmer geological periods is major interest understanding past and future ecosystem dynamics. As we study the different plants composed these forests, it becomes possible to make comparisons with processes occur today. Here describe a silicified late Permian (Lopingian) glossopterid (seed fern) trunk from Skaar Ridge, central Transantarctic Mountains, Antarctica, evidence rootlets growing into its wood. specimen interpreted as nurse log similar those seen some extant forests. Together roots within lacunae older roots, this new suggests existence facilitative interactions among dominated Gondwana Permian. More generally, self‐facilitation might have favoured expansion glossopterids various environments, especially at high palaeolatitudes, icehouse greenhouse transition.

A more detailed analysis is made of the energy spectrum of the diffuse component of extragalactic gamma rays over the range of 0.3- 10 GeV, obtained fromthe EGRET instrument at the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory. The derived excess energy spectrum of high galactic latitude, b > 60°, using intercept method shows that it is correlated with Virgo cluster (over lsr) and average Virgo intensity i...
متن کاملTemperature-induced water stress in high-latitude forests in response to natural and anthropogenic warming.
The Arctic is particularly sensitive to climate change, but the independent effects of increasing atmospheric CO2 concentration (pCO2 ) and temperature on high-latitude forests are poorly understood. Here, we present a new, annually resolved record of stable carbon isotope (δ(13) C) data determined from Larix cajanderi tree cores collected from far northeastern Siberia in order to investigate t...
متن کاملEvidence of meso-scale structure in the high-latitude thermosphere
There is a widely held assumption that the thermospheric neutral gas is slow to respond to magnetospheric forcing owing to its large inertia and therefore, may be treated as a steady state background medium for the more dynamic ionosphere. This is shown to be over simplistic. The data presented here compare direct measurements of the thermospheric neutral winds made in Northern Scandinavia by F...
